Core aeration plugs pulled from a compacted Utah lawn

    Aeration & Soil Health

Your lawn can't breathe. We fix that.

Utah's clay-heavy soil compacts hard — especially in high-traffic areas and after a long winter under snow. Compacted soil blocks water, air, and nutrients from reaching grass roots, which is why lawns plateau no matter how much you water and fertilize. Core aeration punches thousands of small plugs out of the soil, opening channels for everything your lawn needs to reach the root zone.

We use commercial-grade core aerators — not spike aerators, which actually increase compaction by pushing soil sideways. Our machines pull 2-3 inch plugs that break down naturally on the surface, returning organic matter to the lawn. The holes fill in within a few weeks, but the benefits last all season: better water absorption, deeper roots, reduced thatch buildup.

The ideal time to aerate in Utah is early fall — late August through September — when cool-season grasses are entering their strongest growth phase. Spring aeration works too, but fall gives you the added benefit of combining aeration with overseeding. We spread quality seed into the aeration holes where soil contact is perfect for germination.

For lawns that need extra help, we offer topdressing with compost after aeration. This adds organic matter to Utah's naturally mineral-heavy soil, improving structure and water-holding capacity over time. If your lawn feels spongy (thatch buildup) or rock-hard (clay compaction), aeration is the single best thing you can do for it.
