Seasonal Planting
The right plants, in the right spots, at the right time.
Planting in Utah isn't like planting on the coast — our short growing season, alkaline soil, low humidity, and extreme temperature swings mean half the plants at the garden center won't make it through their first winter. We select every plant based on what actually thrives here, not what looks pretty on the tag.
Utah falls in USDA hardiness zones 5 through 7 depending on elevation and location. Our last frost dates run mid-April to mid-May, and first fall frosts hit as early as mid-September in some valleys. We time all planting around these windows to give roots the best chance to establish before temperature extremes arrive.
Spring planting focuses on getting perennials, shrubs, and trees in the ground early enough to build root systems before summer heat. Fall planting — often overlooked — is actually ideal for many woody plants and spring-blooming bulbs. We handle both seasons and can set up annual color rotations if you want beds that pop with fresh flowers each season.
Every plant we install comes with proper soil prep, amendments where needed, appropriate mulching, and clear watering instructions. We know which perennials survive Utah winters reliably (Russian sage, black-eyed Susan, daylilies, ornamental grasses) and which ones are a gamble. We won't plant something that's going to die just to fill a spot.
